Algebra Substitution – Positive Numbers

Five Basketball Players Substituting

In Basketball we can have certain set positions on the court, and substitute player names into these positions.

This gives us one unique team who will play for us during the match.

Algebra Substitution One
Image Copyright 2012 – Passy’s World

We could choose a different team with some different player names, and this would give us a different result.

Our Team Positions chart sets up where we can substitute our players, and we can pick several different names to substitute into this chart.

In Algebra, we have an “Expression” that tells us what different variable letters we have available to substitute numbers into.

The Algebra Expression is like our Basketball Positions Chart.

The Basketball Chart sets up Positions, that we can then substitute Names into.

The Algebra Expression sets up letter Variables, that we can then substitute Numbers into.

Evaluating Expressions Video

Watch the following video which shows how we do basic Algebra Substitution.

Substitution Steps

As per the video, we follow a specific set of steps to work out a substitution question.

Algebra Substitution Steps

Here is the full working out for the example question.

Algebra Substitution Two

Worked Examples

Here are some examples of typical Algebra Substitution questions.

The following working out shows a classic beginner mistake.

Algebra Substitution Example 1 Incorrect
Image Copyright 2012 – Passy’s World

Letters and Numbers joined to each other need to be multiplied together.

Here is the correct working out for this question.

Algebra Substitution Example 1 Correct

The next example shows how to do a two letters substitution.

Algebra Substitution Example 2
Image Copyright 2012 – Passy’s World

In the next example we have a three letter substitution question.

It is very important in these questions to remember to process the operations on the numbers in BODMAS / PEMDAS order.

BODMAS PEMDAS
Image Copyright 2012 – Passy’s World

In “Example 3” below, we do Multiplication and Division first, and the addition of the c = 4 value needs to be done last.

Algebra Substitution Example 3
Image Copyright 2012 – Passy’s World

In our next example we have multiplying brackets.

Because of BODMAS / PEMDAS required order, we do the inside of the brackets first, and then multiply by the outside bracket number last.

Algebra Substitution Example 4

Values Tables Substitution

We sometimes need to use a supplied rule equation to complete a values table of “x” and “y” values.

These tables are used when we need to draw a graph for the rule. However we will not be drawing the graph in this example.

If you want to see an example where we make the graph from the completed values table, then click the lesson link below:

http://passyworldofmathematics.com/plotting-graphs-from-t-tables/

This next example is basically four separate substitution questions, where we are putting our four answers into an answer table.

Algebra Substitution Example 5A
Image Copyright 2012 – Passy’s World

We now need to work out “y” answers for the other three “x” values the same way.

At Passy’s World we find it easiest to do these questions by adding a middle column to the table where we do the working out.

Algebra Substitution Example 5B

Algebra Substitution Videos

The following is a very short one problem video made by some math students.

This next video shows a couple of example questions that involve substitution.

Here is a video which gets into working out some challenging exponents questions.

That completes our lesson on evaluating algebra expressions using normal positive numbers.

In the next lesson, we look at substitution questions that use a mixture of positive and negative numbers.

Algebra Terms and Expressions

Algebra Expressions and Terms 1
Image Source: Copyright 2012 Passy’s World of Mathematics

Learning Algebra involves a whole new language and vocabulary.

When learning a foreign language we have to learn its component parts like Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Pronouns, etc.

We then have to learn how to assemble these individual items into phrases and sentences.

If we are going to learn guitar, we have to learn the strings, the fret notes and scales, and assemble these into chords, then into chord progressions and songs.

If we are learning Basketball, we have to learn to dribble, learn the shots, learn defensive actions, and then assemble this into game play.

For Algebra the component parts are Terms, Coefficients, Pronumerals, Index Powers, and Constants.

We then assemble these parts into mathematical phrases called “Expressions”, or even full Algebra sentences called “Equations”.

In this lesson we will learn the language of Algebra, which is called “Algebra Notation”.

When you learn how to play guitar or a sport, and get good at it, your friends can relate to what you are doing and enjoy watching you perform.

When you learn Algebra, it’s not quite the same thing. But if you are great at Algebra, you can become a computer programming wiz, create a “killer” app or game and that could make you an instant millionaire !

If you want to find out more about how Algebra is used in the real World, and why it is so important, then check out our lesson about this at the link below:

Real World Algebra Formulas

Be prepared, it will be an uphill climb coming to grips with Algebra.
Algebra Terms

Items made up of letters and numbers, which can also have little “power” index numbers on them, are called “Terms”.

Algebra Expressions and Terms 2
Image Source: Copyright 2012 Passy’s World of Mathematics

Items like 4x, -5y, 6ab, 8efh, 1/3k are all Algebra Terms.

Pronumeral letters are also called “Variables”.

Indexes and Indices are also called “Exponents”.

If the term is just a normal number, decimal, or fraction, without any letters on it, it is called a “Constant”.

Algebra Expressions and Terms 3
Image Source: Copyright 2012 Passy’s World of Mathematics

Constants can be normal positive numbers if there is an addition sign coming before the term.

If there is a subtraction sign coming before a constant (or any type of Algebra term), then the term is negative.

Try to remember it like this:

The sign in front of a term is part of the term, like the driveway into a house is part of the home.

Algebra Expressions and Terms 4
Image Source: Copyright 2012 Passy’s World of Mathematics
Binomials and Trinomials

If we join up some Algebra terms using addition and subtraction signs, we create “polynomials’.

The simplest joining involves linking up two terms and is called a “Binomial”.

If we join three terms together we have a “Trinomial”.

Algebra Expressions and Terms 5
Image Source: Copyright 2012 Passy’s World of Mathematics
Expressions Versus Equations

An Equation is a complete Algebra sentence that contains an Equals sign.

Eg. 3n + 1 = 13 . We could solve this equation and figure out that n = 4 is the answer.

An “Expression” does not have an equals sign.

Eg. If we just write “3n + 1” on its own, then it is an expression.

Without an equals sign we cannot work out the exact number value of “n”.

Algebra Expressions and Terms 6
Image Source: Copyright 2012 Passy’s World of Mathematics
Algebra Division Uses Fractions

In Algebra expressions we do not write divided by signs.

Instead we use fractions. Eg.

y divided by 4 is written as y/4.

The / bar in a fraction means the same as divided by.

Algebra Expressions and Terms 7
Image Source: Copyright 2012 Passy’s World of Mathematics
Algebra Multiplying

In Algebra we always leave the multiply signs out, and bunch the letters and numbers up next to each other.

In each Term, the sign (- or +) comes fist, the number comes next, and then the letters in Alphabetical Order.

We leave the positive sign off the front of normal numbers, just like we do in Integers.

Algebra Expressions and Terms 8
Image Source: Copyright 2012 Passy’s World of Mathematics
Algebra and the Correct Order

Just like in all languages, there is a correct order to put our items in when we do Algebra.

Algebra Expressions and Terms 9
Image Source: Copyright 2012 Passy’s World of Mathematics
Algebra Terms Order

The order rules for individual Terms are as follows.

The MULTIPLY items in the term are put into this order :

Sign – If there is a negative sign, it goes first.
(Like the driveway into the house comes first).

Number Coefficient – Number, Fraction, and Decimal, Coefficient comes next.

Letter Pronumerals – These come last and should be put in Alphabetic Order.

Algebra Expressions and Terms 10
Image Source: Copyright 2012 Passy’s World of Mathematics

Fractions are done the same as normal number Coefficients.

Algebra Expressions and Terms 11
Image Source: Copyright 2012 Passy’s World of Mathematics
Algebra Expression Order

There is also a set way we arrange the individual Terms when we group them together to make an Expression.

Algebra Expressions and Terms 12
Image Source: Copyright 2012 Passy’s World of Mathematics

However, there is an exception to the Expressions rule. This exception is that we do not usually start an expression with a negative sign term.

Algebra Expressions and Terms 13

So here is the full rule for writing down expressions in the correct order.

The following examples are typical Algebra questions where we need to identify Coefficients, Constants, Pronumerals, Binomials, and Trinomials.

In this lesson we take a look at how Algebra Formulas and Equations are used in the real world.

If we did not have Algebra formulas for “Kinematics”, we would not have great games like “Angry Birds” !

There are many scientific, economic, financial, medical, engineering, and computer app formulas that are used in our modern world.

Most apps on modern devices use formulas to do things such as adjust photos, or use physics formulas to create realistic game play.

We have a couple of Slideshare presentations which illustrate several different real world formulas.

Algebra Expressions

Abstract Art Pic of Marbles

Word Problems in Mathematics books always have a problem about colored marbles. We have one for you a bit later in this lesson.

Word Problems need to be turned into Algebra Expressions so that we can do mathematics on them, and work out number answers. (Or write a Computer App that gets the answer).

Translating word problems into Algebra requires us to know how various words translate into mathematical symbols such as + – X and / .

If the word problems only have numbers, then it is easy to translate them, once we have practiced doing a few word problems.

Algebra Expressions

An Algebra Expression is made up of Numbers and Letters (or “Pronumerals”), as well as + – x ÷ symbols.

Algebra Expressions One

Consider the following real life example.

Algebra Expressions Two Football mv

Mathematicians rewrite word situations into Algebra Expressions to make them simpler and more direct to work with.

Algebra Expressions are needed in computer apps which are written to process real world situations.

Computers use letter variables and mathematical symbols in the Algorithms in their programs, rather than full word English sentences.

Algebra Expressions Three

Translation Tips for Word Problems

The following translation tables help convert word problems into Algebra Expressions.

Look for the following key words and phrases when reading through word problems.

Whenever you find one of these words, translate the word or phrase into
+, -, x, / , or = .

This will help form the Algebra equation for the word problem.

The following words in a sentence indicate that Adding is taking place.

Adding Translations

The following words in a sentence indicate that Subtraction is taking place.

Subtracting Translations

We need to be careful when translating Subtraction words.

Algebra Expressions Less Than Money

The following words in a sentence indicate that Dividing is taking place.

Dividing Translations

The following words in a sentence indicate that Multiplying is taking place.

Multiplying Translations

The following words in a sentence need to be translated into an equals sign.

Equals Translations

Whenever we get a word problem to convert into Algebra, we can use these translation tables to help us work out what mathematical symbols we need to use to replace the words.

Here are some simple examples.

Video Lessons

This first video shows how to translate word statements into mathematics for Addition and Subtraction.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubaBrD-NQ_w?rel=0]

In this follow up video, Professor Perez includes division and multiplication word problems.

Note that Americans use a Dot to represent a multiply sign, whereas other countries like Australia use an “x” to represent multiplication.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m72bUX3bi_c?rel=0]

Tips and Traps for Word Problems

Word problems involving subtraction often cause difficulty.

For example “five more than twenty” translates to 5 + 20

But “five less than twenty” does NOT translate to 5 – 20

and “five subtracted from 20” does NOT translate to 5 – 20

and “five taken away from 20” does NOT translate to 5 – 20

Think of the following money example to help make sense of this.

Algebra Expressions Less Than Money

Subtraction words like “less than”, “subtracted from”, and “taken away from” all require that we swap the order of the numbers in the sentence.

“Five less than twenty” = 20 – 5

“Five subtracted from 20” = 20 -5

“Five taken away from 20” = 20 -5

Note that the Algebra numbers end up in reverse order to what they were in the original word sentence.

Eg. In the original word sentence the five came first and then the 20. But in the Algebra sentence the twenty comes first, and the five comes last.

The following video is a very comprehensive narrated slideshow about how to translate equations. This video includes examples of “Reversing the Order” subtraction phrases in word problems.
